National Aquarium

The National Aquarium in Qawra is one of Malta’s flagship Public-Private Partnership (PPP) initiatives, driving tourism, environmental education, and regional regeneration along the Buġibba–Qawra coastline.

Opened in 2013, the development transformed a declining tourism zone into a vibrant visitor destination. The modern complex features over 50 marine and terrestrial exhibits, including a large central tank and an immersive underwater tunnel, alongside landscaped public spaces, retail and catering outlets, and educational facilities.

Delivered through a PPP between the Government of Malta and a private operator, with the support of EU funding, the project successfully combined public investment with private sector expertise to create a sustainable, high quality attraction.

Today, the Aquarium is a leading national landmark, boosting tourism in the northern region while promoting marine conservation and community engagement.
